The American Theatre Wing, in collaboration with artists Celia Keenan-Bolger, Sara Bareilles, Catherine Brunell, and friends, has announced the creation of the Gavin Creel Fellowships. This new annual program will grant $25,000 to five emerging theatre actors in tribute to the late Gavin Creel, the Tony-winning actor, friend, and dedicated mentor.
Gavin Creel, who received crucial support when he first transitioned from college into his professional acting career, felt a strong desire to "pay it forward." The Wing shared that Creel dreamed of a program to help young actors navigate the economic and systemic challenges of moving to New York City and launching a professional career, especially those who lacked financial resources.
Fellowship Benefits and Mentorship
Each year, a panel composed of Creel’s collaborators and friends will review applications and select five emerging theater actors beginning their careers in New York. The fellows will receive comprehensive support designed to launch them into the industry:
Financial Grant: A $25,000 grant.
Mentorship: Personal guidance from an assigned industry professional.
Networking: Curated events with Broadway leaders.
Access: Free tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, and access to exclusive Wing programs (Master Class, Working in the Theatre, The PlayreadersClub).
Recognition: Attendance at the Tony Awards as seat fillers.
Celia Keenan-Bolger, a close friend of Creel, shared that the actor had discussed starting a foundation to address the financial hurdles faced by young artists who don't come from wealthy backgrounds.
“My dream is that this fellowship will provide not only financial support but a sense of community and belonging, something Gavin valued enormously,” Keenan-Bolger stated. She expressed gratitude to the American Theatre Wing for providing a home for the fellowship to "carry on his bright radiant light in service of this next generation of theatre artists.”
American Theatre Wing President and CEO Heather Hitchens affirmed the Wing’s deep commitment to the program, stating, “To be able to play this role in extending Gavin Creel’s amazing life and legacy is beyond meaningful.”
The Gavin Creel Fellowship team is now accepting donations toward its goal of building a $3 million endowment to launch the necessary infrastructure and fund the program for 2026. Details on qualifications, applications, and the selection panel will be announced at a later date.
The American Theatre Wing, founded in 1917, is dedicated to supporting creative growth and celebrating excellence to advance human experience and cultural growth through theater.
